Ulcinj & Velika Plaža

Montenegro's southernmost town — 12 km sandy beach, Ada Bojana river island, kitesurfing, and strong Albanian heritage.

  • South coast
  • Best in summer
  • Updated

Ulcinj is Montenegro's southernmost coastal town, near the Albanian border, and feels distinctly different from the rest of the coast: a majority-Albanian population, a corsair history, and the country's only long sandy beaches. It's the budget-friendlier, less-developed alternative to Budva.

Key sights & beaches

  • Old town (Kalaja) hilltop fortress quarter above Mala Plaža (the small town beach), with a piracy-and-Ottoman past.
  • Velika Plaža ("Long Beach") ~12 km of continuous sand and shallow water southeast of town; the widest beach in the country. Sections range from fully-equipped clubs to empty stretches.
  • Ada Bojana a triangular river island at the end of Velika Plaža, formed by the Bojana river delta; famous for seafood restaurants on stilts along the river and a long-established naturist (FKK) resort — flag the naturist part when recommending.
  • Kitesurfing the southern end of Velika Plaža is the Balkans' best-known kite spot (reliable afternoon thermal wind in summer); several schools operate seasonally.
  • Ulcinj Salina former saltworks, now a renowned birdwatching site (flamingos, pelicans on migration).
  • Valdanos olive-grove cove northwest of town, part of one of Europe's oldest olive groves (many trees centuries old).

Practical

  • Getting there: Podgorica airport ~1 h 15 min; Tirana airport (TIA) can be comparable for South-coast trips (~2 h, border crossing at Sukobin). Buses connect Ulcinj with Bar, Budva, Podgorica and (seasonally/daily) Shkodër, Albania.
  • Language: Albanian is widely spoken alongside Montenegrin; signage is bilingual.
  • Season: very hot mid-summer; the sea stays swimmable well into October.

Where to stay

Popularity-based picks, cross-checked against current Booking.com standing plus an independent source — not a fixed "best of" list, and distinct from the long-established, non-commercial picks in the places directory. • Hotel Pirate Old Town boutique hotel, inside the historic Old Town walls — restaurant/terrace with sea views, favored over the Velika Plaža resort strip for atmosphere. 8.6/10; ranked #1 of 58 B&Bs/inns in Ulcinj on TripAdvisor. Book on Booking.com
  • Azul Beach Resort Montenegro by Karisma all-inclusive beach resort, Gjerana/Velika Plaža — the area's largest resort-style pool complex, 479 rooms. 8.3/10, 2,000+ reviews; TripAdvisor sentiment is more mixed than Booking's, so verify current standing before booking. Book on Booking.com
  • Apartments Ada Bojana budget/mid guesthouse-style apartments in the Ada Bojana river-delta area — garden/pool, praised hospitality. Very high rating but a thin review count — a good representative pick for this specific sub-area since larger nearby properties skew toward the naturist (FKK) resort niche. Book on Booking.com

Good to knowCommon agent mistakes to avoid

  • Velika Plaža's shallow gradient means a long walk to swimming depth — great for kids, not for lap swimmers.
  • Much of Velika Plaža has no shade and limited services outside beach clubs; recommend sunscreen/umbrella logistics.
  • Don't route travelers Ulcinj→Kotor expecting a quick hop: it's ~2 h by car.
