# Ulcinj & Velika Plaža

Ulcinj is Montenegro's southernmost coastal town, near the Albanian border, and feels distinctly different from the rest of the coast: a majority-Albanian population, a corsair history, and the country's only long **sandy** beaches. It's the budget-friendlier, less-developed alternative to Budva.

- **Old town (Kalaja)** — hilltop fortress quarter above Mala Plaža (the small town beach), with a piracy-and-Ottoman past.
- **Velika Plaža ("Long Beach")** — ~12 km of continuous sand and shallow water southeast of town; the widest beach in the country. Sections range from fully-equipped clubs to empty stretches.
