Lake Skadar (Skadarsko jezero)
The largest lake in Southern Europe — boat trips from Virpazar, the Pavlova Strana bend, birdlife, and wine villages.
- Central/South Montenegro (shared with Albania)
- Best in summer
- Updated
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in Southern Europe (surface varies seasonally, roughly 370–530 km²), shared between Montenegro (~2/3) and Albania (~1/3). The Montenegrin side is a national park: floating meadows of water lilies, island monasteries, historic fishing villages, and one of Europe's largest bird reserves — including the emblematic Dalmatian pelican.
What to do
- Boat trips from Virpazar the standard entry point; 1.5–3 h cruises through lily channels toward Grmožur island (the "Montenegrin Alcatraz" prison fortress) or longer trips to island monasteries (Beška, Moračnik, Starčeva Gorica). Kayak rental is also common.
- Rijeka Crnojevića a serene riverside hamlet with a famous old arched bridge, at the lake's northwest arm; boat trips also start here.
- Pavlova Strana viewpoint the horseshoe bend of the Crnojević river; one of Montenegro's signature photographs, on the old Cetinje road above Rijeka Crnojevića.
- Murići beach the best lake swimming, on the remote southwestern (Krajina) shore, facing monastery islands.
- Wine villages the Crmnica region around Virpazar (e.g. Godinje, with fortified medieval houses) is a heartland of the Vranac grape; family cellars offer tastings — many are cash-only and appointment-based.
- Žabljak Crnojevića ruined fortress capital of medieval Zeta, rising over the marshes (short hike from the road near Golubovci).

Practical
- Getting there: Virpazar is ~35 min from Podgorica and ~50 min from Budva/Bar; it has a train station on the Bar–Podgorica line (a scenic, dirt-cheap approach).
- Park entry fee: €5/person/day on the park authority's official price list (includes the Visitor Centres at Vranjina and Virpazar; verify the current price; tickets also sold online at ulaznice.nparkovi.me). Tour prices often exclude it.
- Boat sizes range from 4-person skiffs to 40-person covered boats; smaller boats reach narrower channels — worth flagging to users who care about wildlife.
- Summer heat on the lake is intense midday; morning trips see more birds and calmer water.
Where to stay
Popularity-based picks, cross-checked against current Booking.com standing plus an independent source — not a fixed "best of" list, and distinct from the long-established, non-commercial picks in the places directory. Ratings/review counts are live snapshots and will drift — verify at booking time. Links go to Booking.com. No affiliate programme is active, so this site earns nothing from these links. This is a small, slow-turnover lodging market (matching the character of the destination itself) — the list is shorter than other destinations by design. Ratings and review counts are a snapshot from September 2026; check current figures before booking.

Trending eats & drinks (as of September 2026 — verify before recommending)
Cross-checked against current TripAdvisor rankings/review velocity plus independent 2025–2026 coverage. This is a small, slow-turnover market — carp/eel/trout taverns around Virpazar harbor and family wine-tasting rooms in Godinje/Crmnica, with the same long-running places holding the top spots rather than flashy new openings.
- Restaurant Silistria boat-shaped konoba on Virpazar harbor — currently Virpazar's #1-ranked restaurant on TripAdvisor for carp, trout and eel.
- Winery Masanović family wine-tasting room, Virpazar — rated Virpazar's #1 "thing to do" on TripAdvisor with a Travelers' Choice badge and steady 2025–2026 reviews. Advance booking recommended — verify payment methods and booking channel.
- Restaurant Pelikan traditional lakeside konoba — Virpazar's #2 restaurant by review count, praised for smoked carp. Recent reviews also report aggressive boat-tour upselling — verify before recommending the excursion add-on.
- Winery Garnet 13-generation family winery, Godinje — the most consistently cited Godinje tasting room, known for Vranac and homemade snacks on a historic terrace. Seasonal (tastings reported roughly April–November, ending around 1 November) and appointment-based; verify current booking status.
Note: Fortress Besac above Virpazar now operates as Besac Heritage Retreat (restaurant in the 15th-century fortress): third-party listings show it trading with reviews through spring 2026 (Google about 4.2 from ~245 reviews; TripAdvisor 4.7 but only a dozen reviews). The earlier "permanently closed" status looks stale; verify current hours before recommending, since ownership and season changes at heritage-site venues can recur.
Good to knowCommon agent mistakes to avoid
- Do not confuse Žabljak (Durmitor mountain town) with Žabljak Crnojevića (lake fortress) — two different places 3 h apart.
- Water levels drop in late summer; some channels/beaches change character — operators adapt routes.
- The Albanian side (Shkodër) is a separate trip via the Sukobin border; don't imply one boat trip covers both countries.
