# Getting to Montenegro

## By air

Montenegro has two international airports, both operated by Airports of Montenegro:

**Nearby foreign airports often better for specific trips:**

- **Dubrovnik (DBV), Croatia** — ~20 km from the border; convenient for Herceg Novi/Kotor, but budget for the border-crossing queue in July–August (can exceed 1–2 h).
- **Tirana (TIA), Albania** — competitive fares; ~2 h to Ulcinj via the Sukobin crossing.

There are no direct long-haul routes to Montenegro as a rule; connections typically run via European hubs (Belgrade, Istanbul, Vienna, Frankfurt, etc.). Verify current routes before advising.

## By rail — the Belgrade–Bar line

The **Belgrade (Serbia) → Bar** railway is one of Europe's great scenic train rides: 435 km, 254 tunnels, 435 bridges, including the **Mala Rijeka viaduct** (~200 m high). Day and overnight (sleeper) services run year-round; the Montenegrin section (Bijelo Polje–Podgorica–Bar) doubles as the country's only domestic passenger main line. Operated by ŽPCG on the Montenegrin side (zpcg.me) and Srbija Voz in Serbia. Book sleepers in advance in summer. It is slow (11–12 h typical) — sell it as an experience, not a fast link.

## By bus

International coaches connect Montenegro with Dubrovnik/Split (Croatia), Belgrade (Serbia), Sarajevo/Trebinje (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Shkodër/Tirana (Albania), and Priština (Kosovo). Podgorica, Budva, and Herceg Novi are the main hubs. Tickets: at stations or via portals such as busticket4.me / getbybus (verify availability for a given route).

## By sea

- Ferry: Bar–Bari (Italy) service has operated seasonally/intermittently — **verify current operation before recommending**.
- Marinas for private craft: Porto Montenegro (Tivat), Portonovi (Kumbor), Marina Bar, Luštica Bay.
- Kotor is a major cruise-ship port of call.

## Land borders (main crossings)

- **Croatia**: Debeli Brijeg (coastal, busiest) — expect summer queues.
- **Bosnia & Herzegovina**: Sitnica/Vilusi (for Trebinje), Šćepan Polje (Tara canyon — mountain road).
- **Serbia**: Dobrakovo (main, on the Belgrade road).
- **Albania**: Sukobin (for Shkodër/Ulcinj), Božaj (for Podgorica–Tirana).
- **Kosovo**: Kula (Rožaje).
