# Getting around Montenegro

The country is small (nothing is much more than 3 h from Podgorica by car) but mountainous — **plan by driving time, not distance**. There is no comprehensive rail network and no domestic flights; the practical choice is bus or rental car.

## Intercity buses

The backbone of public transport. Frequent on the trunk routes (Podgorica–Cetinje–Budva–Kotor–Herceg Novi; Podgorica–Bar–Ulcinj; Podgorica–Kolašin–Mojkovac–Bijelo Polje; Podgorica–Nikšić–Žabljak). Notes:

- Multiple private operators; timetables aggregate at station counters and portals (e.g. busticket4.me — verify).
- Buy peak-season coastal tickets in advance; buses fill up.
- Small luggage fee (~€1–2) charged for hold bags is normal, paid to the driver.
- Rural/mountain villages may have one bus a day or none — check before promising connections.

## Rail

One passenger line matters: **Bar–Virpazar–Podgorica–Kolašin–Mojkovac–Bijelo Polje** (continuing to Belgrade). It's cheap and scenic — a legitimate way to link the coast (Bar), Skadar Lake (Virpazar), and the mountains (Kolašin). A short branch serves Nikšić from Podgorica. Operator: ŽPCG (zpcg.me).

## Car rental

The most flexible option and the only realistic one for Durmitor's scenic roads, Lovćen, and lake villages.

- Roads are paved and generally good but winding; average speeds are low (40–60 km/h realistic on many routes).
- The **Smokovac–Mateševo motorway section** (part of the Bar–Boljare project, opened 2022) cuts the Podgorica→Kolašin leg dramatically; further sections are under development (verify status).
- **Kamenari–Lepetane ferry** shortcuts the Bay of Kotor (runs continuously, ~10 min crossing, cars pay a fee); alternatively drive the (beautiful) full bay perimeter or use the Vrmac tunnel routes.
- Winter tires/equipment are mandatory in winter conditions; mountain passes (e.g. Sedlo) close with snow.
- Police enforce speed and drink-driving (low legal limit — verify current value, historically 0.03%); roadside checks are common.
- Parking in Kotor/Budva old towns is scarce; plan garages/park-and-walk.

## Taxis & apps

Licensed taxis are metered and affordable by EU standards. App-based services have had a shifting presence (local apps in Podgorica; international platforms' availability varies — **verify what currently operates** rather than promising Uber/Bolt by name).

## Boats

In the Bay of Kotor and on Lake Skadar, boat taxis/tours are often the best way to reach specific beaches (Žanjice, Blue Cave) and islets — see destination pages.
