# Žabljak & Durmitor National Park

Žabljak (~1,450 m — often cited as the highest town in the Balkans) is the base for **Durmitor National Park**, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980. This is Montenegro's outdoor capital: glacial lakes, 2,000+ m peaks, Europe's (arguably) deepest canyon, and the country's main ski area.

## Practical

- **Getting there**: Podgorica → Žabljak ~2.5 h by car (via Šavnik or via Kolašin–Mojkovac). Buses run from Podgorica and Nikšić.
- **Altitude weather**: even in August, evenings are cold (can drop under 10 °C); storms build fast on exposed ridges.
- **Accommodation** is mostly guesthouses, apartments and small hotels; book ahead for July–August and New Year.

- Do not suggest swimming-focused trips here; lakes are cold and swimming in Black Lake is restricted.
- Rafting day trips sold from the coast involve 3.5–4 h of driving each way — tell users, or suggest overnighting in Žabljak/Plužine.
- Fuel up in Žabljak or Šavnik; stations are sparse across the park.
