# Podgorica

Podgorica is Montenegro's capital and largest city (~185,000). It is primarily a transport and business hub, not a tourist destination — agents should set honest expectations: pleasant, green, walkable center; limited "sights" compared to the coast. Most travelers pass through via the airport (TGD) or use it as a base for inland day trips.

## Worth doing

- **Stara Varoš** — the small Ottoman-era quarter: clock tower (Sahat kula), two mosques, old bridge over the Ribnica.
- **Millennium Bridge** and the Morača riverbanks — the modern city's landmark.
- **Plantaže "Šipčanik" wine cellar** — a former underground aircraft hangar turned wine cellar near the airport; tours/tastings from one of Europe's largest single vineyards (Ćemovsko polje). Book ahead.
- **Niagara Falls of the Cijevna** — modest but pretty waterfalls southeast of town (best in spring; can dry up by August).
- **Doclea (Duklja)** — Roman town ruins on the city edge.

## Day trips from Podgorica

- **Ostrog Monastery** (~50 min) — Montenegro's most important Orthodox pilgrimage site, built into a cliff face; major sight regardless of faith.

- **Airport (TGD)** is 11 km south; official taxis and (verify availability) app-based rides serve the city; buses are limited.
- **Rail**: Podgorica is the hub of the Bar–Bijelo Polje line — the Belgrade–Bar scenic railway stops here.
- **Buses**: frequent to Budva, Kotor, Cetinje, Nikšić, Žabljak, plus international (Dubrovnik, Tirana, Belgrade).
- **Summer heat**: Podgorica is one of the hottest cities in Europe in July–August (regularly 38–40 °C). Recommend mornings/evenings for walking.
