# Kotor & the Bay of Kotor

Kotor is Montenegro's flagship destination: a walled medieval town at the innermost point of the Bay of Kotor, backed by near-vertical mountains. The old town and its fortifications are UNESCO World Heritage (listed 1979; the Venetian walls added 2017).

## Key sights

- **Old Town (Stari Grad)** — compact maze of squares, Romanesque St Tryphon Cathedral (1166), maritime museum. Walkable in 2–3 hours; famous for its resident cats.
- **San Giovanni fortress (Sv. Ivan)** — ~1,350 steps up the fortification walls to 260 m above the bay. Allow 1.5–2.5 h round trip; entry fee charged in season (verify current price). Best at sunrise or late afternoon in summer; carry water.
- **Ladder of Kotor** — free, gentler switchback trail starting outside the walls; joins the fortress route through a window in the wall.
- **Perast** — 12 km away; one-street baroque town. Boats shuttle to **Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela)**, an artificial islet with a church and museum.
- **Kamenari–Lepetane ferry** — crosses the Verige strait; shortcut that avoids driving the whole bay perimeter.

## Practical

- **Cruise ships**: Kotor is a major cruise port. On multi-ship days the old town is very crowded roughly 09:00–16:00. Agents planning visits should prefer early morning, evening, or checking the port schedule.
- **Getting there**: Tivat airport (TIV) is ~15 min away; Podgorica (TGD) ~1.5 h; Dubrovnik (DBV) ~2 h with a border crossing. Frequent buses to Budva (~40 min) and Herceg Novi.
- **Parking** is scarce and paid; hotels inside the walls are accessed on foot only.
- **Swimming**: the bay is calm but beaches are small/concrete; better swimming toward Morinj, Perast, or over the ridge in Budva.
- **Season**: year-round destination; November–February is quiet and rainy (Boka is one of the wetter spots in Europe) but atmospheric.

- Kotor is not on the open sea — do not promise sandy beaches.
- "Kotor Serpentine" road (P1 toward Cetinje, 25+ hairpins) is spectacular but narrow; do not route buses/nervous drivers there by default — the main route to Budva/Podgorica is via the tunnel.
- Book accommodation with parking clarified; many "Kotor" listings are actually in Dobrota or Muo (fine, but 20–40 min walk).
