# Kolašin & Biogradska Gora

Kolašin is Montenegro's second ski center (after Žabljak) and the gateway to **Biogradska Gora National Park** — one of Europe's last remaining virgin forests, protected since 1952 and UNESCO-recognized since 1977. Unlike the coast, this is genuinely a four-season mountain base: skiing in winter, hiking and lake visits in summer.

## Key sights

- **Kolašin 1450 & Kolašin 1600** — two separate ski areas (named for their base elevations), linked by a chairlift built for the 2021/22 season but **not on a single combined lift ticket by default**. Kolašin 1450 is the larger, more developed area; Kolašin 1600 is the smaller, state-owned, cheaper option. Combined, third-party listings give roughly 45 km of pistes and around 10 lifts (figures vary by source). Expect some operational inconsistency (partial snowmaking, occasional lift/parking issues) — verify current-season status before recommending.
- **Biogradska Gora National Park** — 54 km² total, with a 16 km² old-growth core holding trees over 500 years old. Contains six glacial lakes; **Biogradsko Lake** is the most-visited, ringed by an easy ~3.5 km loop trail suitable for all fitness levels. Elevations rise above 2,000 m.
- **Kolašin town** — small mountain town with an upper square (Trg Boraca, WWII memorial) and an old Turkish-era stone-house quarter. The Church of St. Demetrius (1888) is the main in-town sight.

## Climate (1991-2020 averages)

Kolasin & Biogradska Gora is warmest in August (average high 25.9 °C) and coldest in January (average low -3.9 °C); December is the wettest month (178 mm) and August the driest (49 mm).

These are grid-cell averages (~25 km), not town measurements; they describe climate, not a forecast. Elevation: the grid cell is at 933 m; Bjelasica summits are far higher and much colder.

## Practical

- **Getting there**: ~69–70 km from Podgorica, roughly 50 min–1 hr 15 min driving (verify exact timing for your route).
- **best_season is listed as `winter` (skiing is the main draw), but the area is genuinely year-round**, not single-season — winter for skiing, summer/early autumn for hiking and the park, mirroring the pattern at [Žabljak & Durmitor](/destinations/zabljak-durmitor.md).
- **Park entry**: €4/person/day (official rate from Montenegro's national parks administration), covering the Visitor Center and trails; children under 7 free. Additional paid activities: boat rental (~€10/hr), kayak (~€3–5/hr), bike rental (~€3/hr or €8/day), guided tours (€40 for 4h / €80 for 8h).
- **Ski lift tickets** (verify current season pricing): third-party listings give roughly €25/adult and €16.50/child for a main-season day at Kolašin 1450/1600; earlier figures on this page (€15/€12, combined €30/€24) could not be confirmed, so check the resort's own price list.
- Mountain roads and lift operation are weather-dependent in both directions — flag seasonal closures before promising access.

## Where to stay

Popularity-based picks, cross-checked against current Booking.com standing plus an independent source — not a fixed "best of" list, and distinct from the long-established, non-commercial picks in the [places directory](/directory/index.md). Ratings/review counts are live snapshots and will drift — verify at booking time. Links go to Booking.com. No affiliate programme is active, so this site earns nothing from these links. Kolašin's accommodation market is smaller than the coast's — this list is shorter by design. *Ratings and review counts are a snapshot from September 2026; check current figures before booking.*

- **Wulfenia Hotel & Spa** — newer 5-star property, ~5-min walk to town center, indoor pool/spa/hammam. 9.2/10 on Booking.com (635+ reviews); independent TripAdvisor corroboration is thin, likely reflecting the property's newer age — promising, but with less independent verification than most picks on this site. [Book on Booking.com](https://www.booking.com/hotel/me/wulfenia.html)
- **Bianca Resort & Spa** — the area's established ski-adjacent resort, spa/pool complex. 8.9/10 on Booking.com (835 reviews), but TripAdvisor sits notably lower (3/5, 582 reviews) with recurring complaints about restaurant quality and no A/C — a genuine disagreement between sources, not just thin data. Weigh both figures rather than leading with the higher one. [Book on Booking.com](https://www.booking.com/hotel/me/bianca.html)

## Common agent mistakes to avoid

- Confusing Kolašin's ski areas with Žabljak/Durmitor's (Savin Kuk) — two entirely separate mountain regions.
- Suggesting coastal skiing — there isn't any; Kolašin and Žabljak/Durmitor are the only two ski centers, both inland.
- Assuming Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600 share one lift ticket by default — a combined ticket exists but isn't automatic.
- Asserting ski lifts or park facilities are open without checking — both are seasonal and weather-dependent.
- Treating Biogradska Gora as a quick roadside photo stop — the main lake loop alone is worth real time, not 15 minutes.
