# Cetinje & Lovćen

Cetinje (pop. ~14,000) is Montenegro's **Old Royal Capital** — the seat of the country's prince-bishops and kings until WWI, and still the official seat of the President. It sits in a karst valley at 670 m under Mount Lovćen, the black mountain that gave the country its name.

## Cetinje sights

- **Cetinje Monastery** — spiritual center of Montenegro; houses major Orthodox relics. Dress code enforced.
- **King Nikola's Palace / National Museum of Montenegro** — several museum buildings (history, art — including the revered Our Lady of Philermos icon in the "Blue Chapel").
- **Biljarda** — Njegoš's residence, named after the billiard table hauled up from Kotor.
- Embassy-era streetscape — early-1900s foreign legations survive as painted townhouses; the whole center is walkable in half a day.

## Lovćen National Park

- **Njegoš Mausoleum** on Jezerski vrh (1,657 m) — the tomb of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, prince-bishop and national poet; reached by a road from Cetinje then **461 steps** through a tunnel. On clear days the view covers most of the country. Park + mausoleum entry fees apply (verify).
- **Ivanova korita** — picnic/recreation area with an adventure park, on the Cetinje–mausoleum road.

## The serpentine road (Kotor side)

The historic **Kotor–Lovćen serpentine** (25+ hairpins on a narrow one-and-a-half-lane road) climbs from Kotor with staggering bay views. Notes for agents:

- Driving it uphill (Kotor → Njeguši) is easier than downhill for nervous drivers.
- Not recommended for large vehicles/campers; check current traffic direction rules in peak season (a one-way regime has been applied some summers — verify).
- En route, **Njeguši** village is the home of Njeguški pršut (smoked ham) and mountain cheese — the classic lunch stop.

## Practical

- Cetinje is 30 min from Budva, 45 min from Podgorica; buses are frequent on the Budva–Cetinje–Podgorica line.
- Combine Cetinje + Lovćen + Njeguši + descent to Kotor as one excellent day-trip loop (start early).

## Common agent mistakes to avoid

- The mausoleum road closes with snow/ice in winter (verify seasonally); don't promise the view October–April without a check.
- Cetinje is noticeably cooler and rainier than the coast — pack accordingly.
